Charles is the son of the late Deward A. "Buck" Blackwood and Jewell Merritt Blackwood. Buck served in the Navy on the USS Texas (BB-35). He later worked with CP Buckner Steel and then Bell & Howell before retiring from the U.S. Postal Service. Jewell, affectionately known as "Mrs. B", served with the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City Schools for many years. Charles grew up and currently lives on the family farm in Southern Orange County.
Charles and his wife Lisa have two children. Their son, Casey is a Graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and is employed with Ubisoft Video Game Developer. Their daughter, Jordan is a Graduate of East Carolina University, and is the Marketing Coordinator for North State Dental Partners. She is married to Corey Frye, and they have two sons, Hunter and Bryson.
