Governor Stein appoints Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood as Chair of the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission - March 2025
A four-decade veteran of law enforcement has taken leadership of the Governor’s Crime Commission. Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood now chairs the 44-member commission, a news release from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety says. Blackwood joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 1980 as a patrol deputy, rose through the ranks and was elected to the first of three terms as sheriff in 2014. He also was elected as President of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association in 2022 and appointed to the SBI Center for the Analysis of Police Use of Force in 2020. He was first appointed to the crime commission in 2017 and has served as its vice chair. “Throughout his career, Sheriff Blackwood has demonstrated a deep commitment to public service and public safety,” Caroline Farmer, executive director of the Governor’s Crime Commission, said in the release. “He has earned the respect of criminal justice partners in Orange County, in Raleigh and across the state. I am grateful that he has agreed to chair the commission and continue to help shape criminal justice policy in our state.” The commission serves as the chief advisory body to the governor and the secretary of the Department of Public Safety on crime and justice issues.
GOVERNOR COOPER APPOINTS ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF AS VICE CHAIR OF GOVERNOR'S CRIME COMMISSION - September 2020
Hillsborough, NC (September 18, 2020) – This week, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper appointed Orange County Sheriff Charles S. Blackwood as vice chair of the Governor’s Crime Commission (GCC). Governor Cooper originally appointed Sheriff Blackwood to the Commission in 2017.
As vice chair, Blackwood will take on increased leadership in the 45-person Commission. He said, “I’m honored to accept this new role on the Governor’s Crime Commission. I’ve served on the Commission for several years now, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for the knowledge and talent working on behalf of the people of this State.”
The GCC is the chief advisory body to the Governor and to the Secretary of Public Safety on crime and justice issues. The Commission includes the heads of statewide criminal justice agencies, appointed state and local government officials, and private citizens. Additionally, the GCC also applies for federal criminal justice funds from the US Department of Justice on behalf of North Carolina. The Commission then distributes these funds, along with state appropriated monies, through a grant application process.
Blackwood added, “The work being done by the Commission; for our Courts, the victims of crime, and our law enforcement officers is more important now than ever, and I feel we are well positioned to meet the challenge.”
